An Average Postpartum Shift

Ever wonder what a typical postpartum night shift entails? This page walks you through the nightly rhythm of caring for a newborn, from soothing and feeding to monitoring sleep and supporting recovery, giving you a clear picture of what to expect when a postpartum doula or overnight caregiver is on duty.

  • Doula arrives 8:30–10 PM, checks in, reviews the day q/ parents, and addresses baby care questions.


  • Supports the parent with nursing or bottle-feeding guidance.


  • Shows partners newborn care tips, techniques, and hands-on strategies.


  • Parents rest or enjoy quiet time while the doula manages nighttime care.


  • Feeds, changes, swaddles, and soothes the baby to sleep with as many snuggles as needed.

  • Doula straightens up the home, folds some laundry, and does some dishes


  • Doula cleans, sanitizes and prepares the breast pump and bottles and feeding products/supplies


  • Doula brings baby to mother to nurse in bed or bottle-feeds the baby


  • Doula burps, change diapers, re-swaddles, and soothes baby back to sleep while implementing safe sleep practices


  • Doula may have brief rest if baby is asleep, all tasks are completed, & parents

  • Doula prepares a simple breakfast for the parents (Groceries are provided by clients, menu is agreed beforehand)


  • Baby is settled in the parents' room, or the doula simply puts baby in bassinet/crib, hands over the monitor quietly so you can continue to sleep


  • Doula leaves her shared notes on counter or via text/app about what the baby did during the night, tracking all feeds, reflux, and changes


  • between 6-8am, doula verifies next scheduled shift &  reminds family to reach out if they need anything and completes shift.

  • Provides ongoing support via text, phone, and email to answer questions and discuss concerns.


  • Offers research-based information and resources to help families make informed decisions, including access to a free-to-use resource library.


  • Families can access the doula’s curated library of local and national resources, infographics, guidebooks, and workbooks.


  • Parents receive a catalog of personally vetted small businesses and community referrals, covering services from organizing and meal planning to dog walking and concierge lactation or pediatric care.
